Natural beauty of Dartmoor inspires Tara to launch range of organic skincare products

A Plymouth beauty therapist has launched a new range of handmade organic skincare products inspired by the natural beauty of Dartmoor.

Tara Leader, who is based in Woolwell, wanted to expand her home-based beauty therapy business – launched in 2014 under the name Tara’s Tratments – but was reluctant to go down the salon route.

Inspired by the success of other online businesses she decided to create The Dartmoor Skincare Company brand with an initial range of five products: a cleanser, toner, moisturiser, hand cream and body cream.

The products are made with ethically sourced ingredients and are based on blends of organic oils, flower waters, botanical extracts and vegetable butters. All of Tara’s suppliers are certified by the Organic Soil Association.

In keeping with the brand’s ‘Inspired By Nature’ ethos, Tara has chosen ingredients such as organic sweet almond oil, grapeseed oil, thistle oil and castor oil to create products that are naturally rich in skin loving vitamins. All the skincare creams are made with pure Dartmoor water, not purified tap water.

The products were developed with the help of extensive testing and feedback from clients, family and friends.

Tara said: “I am very aware of skin sensitivity as both my children suffered with eczema when they were little. I started researching the ingredients in baby care products and discovered that if I avoided sulphates, their flare-ups would disappear.

“This is how my passion for skincare originally began. It is also why my products never contain sulphates, paragons, synthetic colours or fragrances. They are suitable for vegans and will never be tested on animals.”

Tara prepares all the products at home and mails them to a growing number of customers, not only in the UK but also overseas – including a number of celebrities, who remain confidential.

“I launched the website and online business in May and it has been growing steadily ever since. I have been fortunate to have some very positive press coverage and I get a lot of business by way of recommendation.”

Tara said: “People often ask me the secret to good skin. It starts with regular maintenance by which I mean you should cleanse, tone and moisturise twice a day – first thing in the morning and before going to bed.

“Just make sure to have all your products in one place for convenience and remember to stock up on cotton pads for easy removal.”

When she is not busy despatching orders or providing a range of beauty treatments for clients, Tara is a volunteer with the cancer charity, Look Good Feel Better (LGFB).

“Look Good Feel Better is the only worldwide support group for women with the visible side effects of cancer treatment,” said Tara. “The charity is focused on helping women to regain and improve their self-esteem, confidence and wellbeing and I have been involved in running skincare and makeup workshops for the charity.

“I am privileged to be regularly asked to provide pampering treatments at NHSD Macmillan events, where patients and carers can obtain information and advice and also book in for a mini treatment with me for some much deserved pampering,” she added.
